On November 2nd 1982, Channel 4 began its transmission across England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Following a welcome announcement to the brand new channel, the now iconic Countdown was the first programme to air. Presented by Richard Whiteley, the gameshow began with the statement, “as the countdown to a brand new channel ends, a brand new Countdown begins."

Forty years on, Countdown remains a staple part of the Channel 4 weekly line-up which sees contestants competing for the sought-after Countdown teapot. This November, to celebrate the milestone anniversary, the show has welcomed four new presenters for a month-long run of special episodes.

This week, Reverend Richard Coles takes the helm as host and joins resident lexicographer Susie Dent, co-presenter Rachel Riley and guest star in Dictionary Corner, Dan Walker.

Having been on air since its launch in November 1982, Countdown is now one of the longest-running quiz shows in the world, subsequently creating the hugely popular spin-off, 8 Out of 10 Cats does Countdown, hosted by Jimmy Carr, responsible for memorable moments including the now infamous Carrot In A Box.

Fellow Countdown fans and eminent broadcasters also hosting throughout the month include Baroness Floella Benjamin, Sir Trevor McDonald and Moira Stuart.

You can watch Richard host every weekday this week from 2:10pm on Channel 4 or catch up on 4oD.
