Raphael Rowe

Broadcaster and journalist wrongly convicted for a crime he didn’t commit
-
Spent 12 years in prison fighting to prove his innocence
-
Host of the Netflix series Inside the World’s Toughest Prisons
At the age of 20, Raphael Rowe was convicted for a crime he did not commit and subsequently spent 12 years in prison.
Having spent years fighting to prove his innocence, in 2000, he won, and his convictions were overturned by the Court of Appeal leaving him free, but changed forever.
Having learned about criminal behaviour, crime and the law from the confines of a maximum-security prison cell, Raphael transferred the determined questioning and methodological research skills acquired to become a respected and unwavering reporter, specialising in social and criminal justice.
Through his work hosting Inside the World’s Toughest Prisons, Raphael aims to shine a light on what justice, injustice and reform look like around the world.
Having visited high security prisons around the globe, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Britain, Colombia, Romania, Costa Rica and South Africa, Raphael has filmed with some of the world’s most dangerous prisoners, speaking to guards, prisoners’ families and politicians about crime and punishment. Although risky, Raphael believes the work is crucial to provide an insight into how prisons around the world work in order to show that with greater knowledge and understanding, real reform can take place.
A skilled researcher, experienced interviewer and tenacious investigator, Raphael channels the adversities he’s faced into action.
In addition to his work as a journalist and broadcaster, Raphael volunteers his time to social justice projects, encouraging and motivating people to overcome their own adversities and achieve their own dreams. Whether they come from a deprived background with limited qualifications, are successful postgraduates, or just seeking inspiration, he is dedicated to implementing real personal growth and change.
