About

Rafael "Rafa" Nadal is one of the greatest players in the history of tennis. Over a professional career spanning more than two decades, he won 22 Grand Slam singles titles, including an unprecedented 14 at the French Open, a record at a single major that may never be matched.

Born in Manacor on the Spanish island of Mallorca, Nadal was introduced to tennis at the age of three by his uncle, Toni Nadal, a former professional player who became his coach and mentor for much of his career. He turned professional at 15, and at 17 he became the youngest man since Boris Becker to reach the third round at Wimbledon.

His breakthrough came in 2005, when, aged just 19, he won the French Open at his first attempt. He claimed 11 titles that season, eight of them on clay, and the name "King of Clay" was born. Combining ferocious left-handed topspin, remarkable speed and an unbreakable competitive spirit, he first rose to world No.1 in August 2008, a year that also brought his first Wimbledon title and Olympic singles gold in Beijing. He would spend 209 weeks at the top of the rankings and finish five seasons as the year-end world No.1.

In 2010, victories at the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open completed his set of all four majors, making him one of the very few men to achieve the career Golden Slam. He added a second Olympic gold, in doubles, at Rio 2016, and helped Spain to multiple Davis Cup triumphs. Alongside Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, he formed the celebrated "Big Four", whose rivalries defined men's tennis for a generation.

His career was far from plain sailing. Nadal battled a long series of injuries, including a chronic foot condition and problems with his knees, wrist, abdomen and hip, which cost him major tournaments and months away from the tour. Time and again he fought his way back to the top, earning a reputation for resilience, humility and mental strength that extends well beyond sport. He played his final professional match at the Davis Cup Finals in November 2024.

Away from the court, Nadal is an entrepreneur and philanthropist. Through the Rafa Nadal Foundation, he champions education and sport as tools to help young people from disadvantaged backgrounds build confidence, develop life skills and reach their potential. The Rafa Nadal Academy in his home town of Manacor extends that commitment to developing the next generation of players.
