About

Duncan Bannatyne is one of the UK's most successful and best-known serial entrepreneurs with a fortune estimated in excess of £400 million. He has created a portfolio of established businesses including hotels, health clubs and spas, and not forgetting carving out a high profile media career.

Outside of his business interests Duncan is best-known as a former business angel and investor on BBC2's Dragons' Den. His strong opinions, no nonsense talk and sharp comments to the show’s would-be entrepreneurs made him one of the most popular Dragons in the Den. An original panellist on the show when it launched in 2005, he remained there for 12 series until 2014 and invested in 36 business ventures.

Duncan also appeared on ITV's philanthropic Million Pound Giveaway (2007), Mind of A Millionaire (2003), a programme that investigated what drives successful entrepreneurs and gives them the will to win and 'Mind Your Own Business', produced for by the BBC, saw Duncan visiting unsuspecting small businesses and showing them the way to success.

Duncan speaks from a wealth of experience and an authentic lived experience of rags to riches. He started his life with nothing, living in a council flat with six brothers and sisters. Business was forced onto his agenda when he was rejected for a paper round where he lived. He knocked on doors to find people who wanted newspapers delivered and persuaded the newsagent to give him his own round.

A spell in the Royal Navy as a junior 2nd class engineering mechanic stoker at RNTE Shotley, near Ipswich, was brought to an unsuccessful end following an incident which ended up with Duncan being Court Marshalled for threatening to throw his commanding officer off the side of a boat landing jetty in Scotland.

His business career began with the purchase of an ice cream van for £450. Duncan soon expanded, buying more vans during the period of the Glasgow Ice Cream Wars and eventually selling the business for £28,000.

With the proceeds of the sale he founded Quality Care Homes in 1986 and sold it a decade later for £26 million. He also owned Just Learning Ltd, which he started with £2 million and sold five years later for £22 million, he also took control of loss-making Alpha Radio, made it profitable and sold it to Border TV.

Duncan Bannatyne then expanded into health clubs, opening the Bannatyne Health Club & Spa chain, plus hotels and property. He acquired 26 health clubs from Hilton Hotels in 2006 at a cost of £92 million.

Awarded Master and Overall Entrepreneur of the year in 2003, his Bannatyne Group is the largest independent chain of health clubs in the United Kingdom with 69 sites. As of 2025, Bannatyne owned 69 health clubs, 45 spas and three hotels across the UK.

He has written seven books: Anyone Can Do It, Wake Up and Change Your Life, How to be Smart With Your Money, How to be Smart With Your Time, 43 Mistakes Businesses Make, 37 Questions Everyone in Business Needs to Answer, and Riding The Storm.

Duncan Bannatyne was awarded the OBE by HM The Queen in 2004, for services to charity.

As a keynote or after dinner speaker, his talk is motivational and inspiring, centred around his personal success story.
