Robert Forkan

Rob Forkan is a remarkable survivor of the Boxing Day Tsunami, which tragically orphaned him. His harrowing survival story and subsequent mental health journey are deeply inspiring. Rob now shares his unique resilience framework, helping others to overcome adversity and develop resilience.

In 2004, after celebrating Christmas Day on holiday in Sri Lanka, Rob and his siblings had to fight for their lives when the tsunami devastated the town of Weligama on Boxing Day. Tragically, his parents got swept away in the waves after they rescued their 2 youngest children, leaving Rob to lead his 3 siblings to safety. With no money or passports, the children managed to get home to Britain by hitchhiking 200 miles to the airport in the countries capital. He survived life-threatening sepsis and life-changing surgery. Recently, he has been involved in a major global documentary on the tsunami for the 20th anniversary.

Rob and his brother Paul wanted to find a positive end to the tragedy and, therefore, set up the WGSN award-winning, socially conscious fashion brand, Gandys. Having always had a nonconformist upbringing, they wanted to create a brand which combined their personal history and passions for travelling, culture and ethical working. 10% of all profits from their products are donated to help other children affected by the Tsunami. The brand and all that they do, like leading global initiatives to build kids’ campuses for underprivileged children has been supported by celebrities far and wide including royalty. Rob has collaborated with renowned brands like Rolling Stones, Liberty, and McLaren.

In 2014, Rob and Paul’s foundation built a Children’s Home in Sri Lanka. This facility provides children with academic support, woodwork lessons, and sports lessons to name a few.

Rob is also anaccomplished author with a forthcoming self-help book on resilience titled "Treat Yourself."
