Stephen Venables

Stephen Venables, mountaineer, writer, broadcaster and public speaker, was the first Briton to reach the summit of Everest without supplementary oxygen. He reached the summit alone, after climbing with a small American-Canadian team of just four climbers with no Sherpa support taking a new route up the rarely visited gigantic Kangshung Face.

Everest was just one of many first ascents around the world during his mountaineering career spanning fifty years and all seven continents and a thrilling highlight in a career which has taken Stephen right through the Himalaya, from Afghanistan to Tibet,  making first ascents of many previously unknown mountains. His adventures have also taken him to the Rockies, the Andes, the Antarctic island South Georgia, East Africa, South Africa and of course the European Alps, where he has climbed and skied over most of his career.

He has published twelve books about his adventures and has appeared in several BBC and other documentaries for ITV and National Geographic, as well as broadcasting on Radio 3 and Radio 4. He also appeared in the IMAX movie Shackleton’s Antarctic Adventure.

His lectures about his travels have entertained theatre audiences, schools, university clubs, festivals and corporate audiences in Britain, America, New Zealand, Australia, India, Norway, Switzerland and Spain.

During the last fifteen years he has led ten expeditions to Antarctica and South Georgia, making many ski ascents and first ascents from the expedition yacht Pelagic Australis and more recently Vinson of Antarctica.
