Former BBC economics journalist and Bank of England Comms Director
As Executive Director of Communications at the Bank of England from March 2011 to July 2014, Nils Blythe was responsible for planning and executing the Bank's communications strategy during a period of significant change, including the arrival of a new Governor.
Prior to joining the Bank of England, for over 20 years Nils was a BBC journalist and presenter, specialising in business and finance. He was Business Correspondent of the Today programme for four years, made numerous television documentaries including 'The Great Dot.Con' — an investigation into the activities of the world's leading investment banks in the dot.com share boom — and 'The Price of Life' – on the economic impact of the AIDS epidemic in South Africa.
Nils Blythe left 'The Money Progamme' to launch the daily business news programme 'Business Today' on BBC News 24, including interviews with the 'movers and shakers' of the business world and political leaders who influence the business environment.
He launched a daily business news discussion programme for the BBC News Channel and played a leading role in the coverage of the financial crisis. Nils' daily dialogues with Eddie Mair on the Radio 4 PM Programme – under the title of ‘Upshares, Downshares' – were much acclaimed for providing an insight into complex issues in plain English.
In his earlier career Nils Blythe worked for the Investors Chronicle and Which? magazine, after an early foray into book publishing. He was educated at Ipswich School and Christ's College, Cambridge. He remains a consultant to the Bank of England.
Nils Blythe is a regular keynote speaker and chairman at many business conferences in Britain and Europe. He has substantial experience of running panel discussions and conducting on-stage interviews.
His expertise as a speaker at conferences includes the causes and consequences of the financial crisis, recent developments in the UK economy and the management of change in a high-profile organisation. He also speaks on 'The Big Picture: How Business is Re-Shaping The World & Our Lives'. In addition to keynote speaking, Nils is an experienced seminar and conference chairman.

Nils Blythe's speech was perfectly pitched for this audience, with a lovely combination of witty but not too indiscreet anecdotes, and some thought-provoking reflections on how the media, the corporate world, politics and monetary policy intersect. His personal experience, on both sides of the media and corporate institutional fence, also meant his talk was supremely well-informed and sympathetic to both constituencies.
